Recuperator's air-to-air rotary heat exchangers consist of a cylindrical rotor containing thousands of channels and characterized by very high surface development, a casing (complete with brush gaskets to minimize leakage between the supply and exhaust air-flows), and a drive supplied by an electric motor that may, if necessary, have a speed controller.

The exchange surface, which is very large in proportion to the volume, makes possible very high performance compared with other types of heat exchanger, reaching even efficiency us much as 85%.
High efficiency and the possibility of recovering both heat and humidity (with a hygroscopic wheel) make for decisive reduction in the installed power of a plant.
Possibility of transferring latent heat.
The possibility of recovering humidity makes it possible to reduce the number of humidifiers.
Compactness can also be achieved with large size machines.
Low pressure-drop.

In rotary recuperators, the heat exchange takes place through the accumulation of heat in the rotor; thus, while the cylinder rotates slowly, the exhaust air moves across half of the shell and transfers heat to the rotor matrix, which accumulates it. The supply air, which moves across the other half, absorbs the accumulated heat. As rotation continues, the parts that absorb and impart heat continue rotating and reversing their motion, and this process can go on indefinitely. The wheel's rotation speed may either be constant or be varied by using a speed controller.

The rotor, which forms the exchange pack, is the main part of the machine; the material used to construct it is aluminium, which, due to its physical characteristics (corrosion resistance, non-inflammability, and duration) is ideal in almost all applications for which the heat exchanger is destined.  
AC Treatment (epoxy coated)
For environments with an aggressive atmosphere, the rotor is protected by a coat of non-toxic, corrosion-resistant paint. The coated rotor is obtained by wrapping the aluminium coil already provided with its protection.
The exchanger pack, made of pre-painted aluminium, can be inserted in a standard casing or in a casing that has also been pre-painted (see the TV option).

AT Treatment (hygroscopic coated)
The standard aluminium or coated aluminium matrix forming the rotor may be treated chemically with an alkaline solution of potassium carbonate, thus creating an oxidized surface that will make the rotor itself hygroscopic. Oxidation makes the surface porous at microscopic level, thus making it possible to transfer humidity between the two air flows.

The rotor may be reproduced in a special hygroscopic aluminium, which ensures high efficiency.

Various options are provided for particular applications, to guiarantee the correct operation for each type of requirement.

The Rotor
The rotor is usually consists of aluminium sheets, which are alternately flat and corrugated. The flexibility of the product range makes it possible to offer also different rotor well height.
Option XP (for a wheel of reduced depth)
For applications in which there are small rotary heat exchangers, in which there may be space problems, or in which a low-pressure drop is called for, it is possible to choose rotors of reduced depth.

Option XD (sectorized rotor)
For applications in which there are space problems for the assembly of units or transport problems, the casing can be delivered in parts and rotor in sectors, for customer assembly.

The importance of the casing should not be underrated, since, with small adjustments, it is possible to have solutions involving considerable savings in time and expense. The standard casing is usually made of galvanized steel sheeting.
Option TP (casing with lateral covers)
The heat exchanger casing may be provided with simple covers for lateral closure.

Option TS (casing with special dimensions)
The external dimensions of the casing may vary in order to adapt it to the customer's requirements.

To facilitate the supervision and maintenance of the rotary heat exchanger, the positioning of the motor inside the exchanger casing is important. All possible positionings have been given in the table.

Special application
The installation of rotary heat exchangers is not advised.

Significant presence of dust
The need to clean the heat exchanger periodically makes it advisable to choose a heat exchanger with a wide "L" rotor spacing, in such a way as to facilitate the removal of impurities.


The electric motor, which enables the heat exchanger to be used, is designed in accordance with the size of the rotor. If its speed is constant, we have a 380 V motor; otherwise, if there is a speed controller, the motor will be 240 V. In any case, all motors are provided with heat protection.

Speed Controller
The speed controller may be supplied together with the rotary heat exchanger, with a 240 V motor with thermal contact. The speed controller, like the motor, is to be installed on the inspection side of the rotary heat exchanger.

Purging Sector
The possibility exists of contamination between two air flows through either leakage or entrainment:
Leakage takes place due to a difference in static pressure as between two air flows. To prevent this happening, it is possible to install a fan that will keep the flow discharged in depression.
When entrainment occurs, the air remaining trapped within the wheel is transferred to the other flow after half a revolution. To reduce this, the heat exchanger is provided with a purging sector.
The purging sector is positioned on the side of the supply air, downstream of the rotor, at the point at which the rotor moves from the return to the supply side. It has to be positioned in such a way that it accords with the differential pressure. A certain amount of the outdoor air will be transferred to the return when the rotor moves from the exhaust channel to the supply side, thus permitting purging of the rotor to take place.
In many applications, the fact that part of the air is recycled is of no importance. Critical applications, on the other hand, such as operating-theatres in hospitals, call for rigorous control of the entrainment flows to forestall any risk of contamination.

To ensure the best performance, rotary heat exchangers require simple periodic maintenance including:
a) Cleaning of the equipment to get rid of accumulations of fibre, dust, etc;
b) Motor and electric plant check
c) Control of the state of tension of the transmission belts.
