MATERIALS

The material used for the plates has little or no effect on the heat transmission. More importance attaches to corrosion resistance and cost. Given its corrosion resistance, workability, non-inflammableness, and duration, aluminium is used for most of the applications.
In environments with an aggressive atmosphere, the aluminium is protected by a non-toxic, epoxy-based, corrosion-resistant coat of paint (AC version). Lastly, should the operating temperature be very high (exceeding 200°C) or involve industrial processing applications, use can be made of AISI 316L stainless steel alloys.

OPTIONS  ›  CASING, SIDE PLATES, CORNER PROFILES, SEALING, BY-PASS WITH OR WITHOUT DAMPERS

Various options are provided for particular applications, to guarantee the correct operation for each type of requirement.

Casing
The importance of the casing should not be underrated, since, with small adjustments, it is possible to have solutions that result in considerable savings in time and money. The casing consists of side panels and corner profiles.
 
Option TV (painted casing)
The standard casing can be protected with an epoxy coating against any aggressive substances. This option is normally associated with "option AC" painted plates.

Option RF (reinforced casing)
In the case of applications in which the heat exchanger may undergo particularly intense mechanical stresses, or if the equipment is especially long, the casing may be reinforced.

Casing/Side Plate
The sides of the standard heat exchangers can be made of aluminum or galvanized steel (in agreement with data sheets you can find on the updated selection program).
 
AR option
Side plate made of galvanized steel, with plane surface and easily installation (slide-in).
Is available for all B series with plate of 20 mm (except for B02), and for F07 and F08 model with plate of 30 mm.

AE option
Side plate made of galvanized steel, with double fold, suggest for duct installation Is available for all B and F series (except for B02), with plates from 20 mm to 40 mm.

AZ option
Side plate made of aluminium, made with reduced thickness of 1mm, with plane surface and easily installation ((slide-in).
This solution (available only for some model of B series) makes it possible to have a bigger plate surface, which may be important in confined spaces. In addition, this equipment is very light and easy to handle.

Casing/Corner Profiles
Standard corner profiles are made with aluminium profiles in accordance with a drawing and a matrix patented by Recuperator. They have a 90° angle and throughout their length have drilling marks for installing with ducts.

Heat exchangers can be fitted with special corner profiles so that they can be quickly installed in the air handling unit.

Option CS (bevelled profiles
Heat exchangers in the B Series can be given special bevelled profiles. Generally, this type of corner profile goes with reduced side panels (Option AZ).

Sealing
Recuperator uses various types of sealing material for different purposes.. The sealing materials normally used is modify silicon.
 
Option NS (without silicon)
Recuperator equipment can be produced without the use of silicon. In some applications, however (for example, for high temperatures), in order to ensure the tightness between air-flows, that sort sealing material is necessary.

Option SC (extra sealing)
Equipment in the F Series is made with mechanical sealing ­ Option "SM". To ensure better tightness between two air-flows, extra sealing can be used. This option is above all advised for application such as hospitals, white rooms, spay booth, etc. In the B Series, the SC Option is standard. Recuperator equipment has been tested in independent laboratories with excellent results, and diagrams testifying that it is airtight are available.

(resistance to high differential pressure)

During manufacturing, the plates may be subjected to special treatment to make them resistant to differential pressures up to 2500 Pa.

By-pass
Recuperator offers a wide range of by-pass dampers, which are fitted directly on the heat exchanger casing. The dampers are made with aluminium blades, the gears of plastic, and they are fitted with airtight gaskets. Recuperator provides diagrams testifying to the tightness of the dampers, tested at the laboratories of the Turin Politecnico.

For all models, is available the damper with standard aluminium, or with prepainted aluminium.

The heat exchangers are provided with a lateral bypass section without a damper.

The heat exchangers have a central by-pass section without a damper. The choice of this type of by-pass is advised in very long units; this solution enables the air to pass through, thus reducing turbulence and pressure drops at the input.

This solution makes it possible to hold the motor driving the damper inside the AHU.

(lateral bypass with damper and vertical blades)

The heat exchangers are provided with a lateral by-pass section inside which a blade is installed for regulating the flow. The blade is supplied separately with the assembly kit.

Type of Installation
The direction of the air-flows is not of particular importance; however, it is advisable for the exhaust air to pass through the heat exchanger from top to bottom in cases in which the formation of condensation is expected. Some examples of the movement of the two air-flows: by using a single heat exchanger. It is possible, in certain cases, to use several heat exchangers to prevent any troubles such as: limited space available or a big difference between the two air flows.

Condensation
Plate heat exchangers do not allow the passage of humidity from one flow to the other, but may use part of the latent heat contained in the humid exhaust air. Indeed, in the case of very low external temperatures, if the exhaust air is cooled until it reaches its dew temperature, condensation forms and the heat liberated during the change of phase (latent heat) is transferred to the wall of the heat exchanger.
 
The direction of the air-flows is not normally of any great importance; however, whenever the formation of condensation is expected, it is advisable that the exhaust air should cross the heat exchanger from the top towards the bottom. In this way, due to the effect of gravity, the condensation flows into the lower part of the duct or of the air handling unit, where it is advisable to fit an outflow with a siphon.   Condensazione
Differential Pressure
High differential pressures may deform the plates, and should they exceed the design limits indicted in the Rex calculation program and in the catalogues, they might cause permanent damage to the exchanger, leading to a reduction in efficiency, a change of flow, and excessive leakage.
 
For applications calling for high speed and/or high differential pressures (for example, in hospitals), Recuperator provides a special structure for greater resistance.   Pressione differenziale
Control
If a temperature of the humid air current is below the dew point, condensation takes place with the risk that ice will form and cause an increase in pressure-drop, as well as a deterioration in the performance of the heat exchanger.
The formation of ice may be controlled both by pre-heating the outdoor air, as well as by diverting part of it.
 
The bypass solution is generally more suitable, from the financial point of view, rather than the pre-heating method. Dampers are mounted on the casing of the heat exchanger, and the by-pass sectors are designed in such a way as to show pressure-drops similar to those that take place inside the heat exchanger.   Regolazione
Maintenance
Recuperator equipment has no moving parts, so it requires no mechanical maintenance. In the presence of dust or contaminant substances, it is necessary to provide adequate filters upstream of the heat exchanger.

Operation and Maintenance Manual
 
The equipment can be cleaned using compressed air (in the case of dust deposits), paying attention at the same time not to damage the plates and the seals, or by spraying with detergents in the event of grease deposits. Highly alkaline solutions or other aggressive substances for dealing with aluminium or sealants are obviously to be avoided.

N.B.: In countries subject to severe sandstorms, it is necessary to provide sand-filters, followed by high-efficiency pouches on outdoor air inlets.
